Saving Tips: Turn Off The Lights

Still struggling to get into this new routine but I do have a few minutes and it's been a few days since my last post so, here we go. For today's simple tip to help you save a little extra money we'll once again turn to you electric bill.

Sometimes I feel like I'm constantly turning lights off or asking my 4 year old to go turn off a light. Apparently when your 4 you think all lights need to be on if your in the room. Maybe it's just a complex that comes with finally being able to reach the light switches or something but when he enters a room the lights go on and when he leaves it, nothing changes.

I try not to make a big deal out of leaving the lights on because, while it might save me a few dollars a month at best I'm not think that causing disorders because dad was always mad about the lights being on is worth it. But gentle reminders about light awareness is a common activity in our home.

Like I said, this practice probably isn't going to save you a ton of money, especially if you use energy efficient light bulbs, but it is an act of consciousness that could add up over a life time of regular practice. One of my neighbors and I have developed a habit of comparing our electric bills each month to see who can keep it the lowest and so far, I remain unbeaten. So little habits like this one do pay off.

I am also a huge fan of renewable energy and reducing my impact on the environment so I figure that if I can save a few kilowatts of electricity I'm also helping out the world, right.

But, whatever your motivation might be, work on being conscious about mindlessly leaving your lights on and maybe our combined effort can pay off in a big way.

If you want some more info about how to calculate how much this practice can save you I'd suggest reading the article find at saver/when-turn-your-lights. They give some specifics of how the calculations work and some information about the different lights bulb options.

  1. Love the neighbor electric bill competition. That's awesome! And agreed that it may not be a lot but it's still something. It would be great if the electric company was able to provide more detailed bills. How awesome would it be to see your electric costs by the day/hour!
